Planting season is under way!

April 20th, 2013

Christmas Tree planting is well under way.  Just think…. the first year of harvest for these trees will be 2020!!!  I say “first year” because we typically harvest from any given block of trees for 3-4 years as all the trees do not grow at the same rate, and do not fill in to become that “Perfect Tree” exactly the same.

With a rainy evening last night, we will not be planting today, but instead we’ll be fertilizing the trees.  With only 1/4″ of rain, we’ll be back at planting tomorrow!

Starting Seed!

February 27th, 2013

We are excited for 2013!  We are in the process of building a new greenhouse, which should be complete within 2 weeks.  This will be just in time for our vegetable transplants, and, some of our Christmas Trees!  My grandfather used to start his trees in a greenhouse, and we’re going to try again.  We’ve been having a bit of trouble in the last couple years finding the right seedlings/transplants for our annual plantings.  Hopefully, this will all change!  The photo below, is how we have to begin with many of the tree seeds… soaking them in water.  Depending on the specie, some will soak for 24hrs, while others will be 48hrs.  So, tomorrow, or Friday, all will be out, and put back in the refrigerator.  We’ll then plant them in a few weeks.  We’ll follow with more pictures as we progress.  Out of curiosity, what is your favorite kind of tree?

A well cared for Christmas Tree!
