With a rainy evening last night, we will not be planting today, but instead we’ll be fertilizing the trees. With only 1/4″ of rain, we’ll be back at planting tomorrow!

We are excited for 2013! We are in the process of building a new greenhouse, which should be complete within 2 weeks. This will be just in time for our vegetable transplants, and, some of our Christmas Trees! My grandfather used to start his trees in a greenhouse, and we’re going to try again. We’ve been having a bit of trouble in the last couple years finding the right seedlings/transplants for our annual plantings. Hopefully, this will all change! The photo below, is how we have to begin with many of the tree seeds… soaking them in water. Depending on the specie, some will soak for 24hrs, while others will be 48hrs. So, tomorrow, or Friday, all will be out, and put back in the refrigerator. We’ll then plant them in a few weeks. We’ll follow with more pictures as we progress. Out of curiosity, what is your favorite kind of tree?

I felt compelled to write today to show what can happen (but by no means will…) when you properly care for your Christmas Tree. This Douglas Fir was cut approximately 12/10/12 and immediately put in water when it got home. It was not placed in the house until a couple days later. Water was kept on the tree all the time, and the tree is still up (sans ornaments at this point). The photo’s were taken a couple days ago, and, if you look closesly, particularly at the close up… the tree has started to GROW! Several buds have approximately 1/2″ of new growth (the light green colors). Amazing! Just water, no preservative.

People have laughed at me because I always talk about a blue spruce that did this as a kid… I never found pictures of it, but here’s living proof that it can happen. As a reminder, we only suggest a fresh cut as close to the time the tree is being put up (if it is a pre-cut tree), and keeping it well watered from the time the tree arrives home. We don’t suggest the use of any “preservatives” or “additives”… and this is proof of why!
